Young's Dairy Farm
Life is busy and money is often tight. But those are no reasons to sit at home and dream about a vacation.
Just a few hours away is a quick escape that can be a weekend off or just a day away. The greater Yellow Springs area, near Dayton, Ohio, offers a little of something for every taste.
A taste of farm life can be found at Young's Dairy Farm where the featured attraction is the herd of Jersey cows. But don't let the name mislead you. There's more to do than look at bovines.
There are goats to feed, a delight for several children on a recent sunny afternoon. The farm boasts a children's area as well as batting cages and, in season, a corn maze and hay rides.
The real treat is the taste of the farm found inside its dairy store. Visitors line up for ice cream made from the rich milk of the farm cows, which is served as is or made into wonderful dairy treats like sundaes and shakes.
The small grill also offers meals, including farm-style breakfasts.
After enjoying that scoop or cone of one of the many flavors of ice cream offered, the next step is scouting out the cheese cooler. And yes, the cheese is also made from milk from the herd.
Customers can buy variety boxes as well as blocks of cheese and cheese curds. Baked goods and snacks are also offered for sale.
Yellow Springs is described locally as "a hippy community," and it is indeed laid back and casual. Downtown streets boast a variety of unique shops with local and international crafts and wares.
Nearly every shop has a dog or cat - or multiples of them in some cases - that serve as greeters. In keeping with the relaxed atmosphere, most shops are open from 10 a.m. or so to 6 p.m., so keep that in mind if you plan to shop on your visit.
Yellow Springs also has a number of fine local restaurants unique in their offerings. These are open expanded hours with many staying open late into the evening. Highly recommended is the Yellow Springs institution, Peach's Grill.
Because of COVID-19, Yellow Springs is a mask community. Visitors are being asked to join residents in wearing masks when they are inside a business including restaurants.
Yellow Springs is near Springfield, which has its own attractions including Veterans Park, which has many free activities and events, and the Springfield Art Museum. Although small, this museum has several galleries with art in various media by both local and international artists.
The exhibits are changed every few months to keep the displays fresh.
